Protecting Shoes in Texas Heat and Sun

Why North Texas summers age leather faster, and what to do about it.

Heat drives the oils out of tanned leather. A car parked in a McKinney lot in July can exceed 140F inside, which is enough to cook the fats out of a hide in a single afternoon.

Never store leather in a vehicle, a garage or against an exterior wall that takes afternoon sun. Keep pairs in a closet with airflow and use cedar trees, which absorb moisture without drawing oil.

Condition on a quarterly schedule between May and September instead of the twice-yearly routine that works in milder climates. If the leather already shows fine surface cracks along the vamp, stop wearing the pair and have it professionally rehydrated before the cracks reach the fibre.

When to bring it to us instead

Home care handles maintenance. Structural problems — worn welts, split seams, collapsed heel counters, set-in stains — need a bench, tools and matched materials. If you are unsure which side of that line your pair falls on, send a photo or bring it by and we will tell you straight.
