Getting Odour Out of Shoes for Good

Why deodorising sprays fail and what actually kills the source.

Odour is bacteria feeding on moisture in the lining and footbed. Masking sprays add perfume without touching the cause, which is why the smell returns in a day.

Dry the shoe completely between wears — this alone solves most cases. Cedar trees, alternating pairs, and removing insoles overnight all work. Newspaper stuffing is a reasonable emergency measure.

For established odour, replace the footbed rather than treating it. If the lining itself is saturated, we can strip and replace the interior lining on quality shoes, which is far cheaper than replacing the pair.

When to bring it to us instead

Home care handles maintenance. Structural problems — worn welts, split seams, collapsed heel counters, set-in stains — need a bench, tools and matched materials. If you are unsure which side of that line your pair falls on, send a photo or bring it by and we will tell you straight.
